Synopsis
In 1986, reactor number four at Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded leaking radioactive material into the atmosphere. In response, a “sarcophagus” was constructed under a huge arch to prevent water and snow seeping into the site and dust dispersing from it.
The New Safe Confinement is an extraordinary feat of engineering and will offer a long lasting defence against radioactive leakage. Completed in 2017, the structure encloses the remains of reactor number four and the “sarcophagus”, making it large enough to house the Statue of Liberty.
The talk will cover the background to the disaster, and address the construction methodology, based on the environment and remains of the plant.
