The courses are suitable for beginners and more advanced practitioners alike.

What is Pipa?

Pipa is a four-stringed instrument somewhat similar to the lute used to play traditional Chinese music. The instrument is played by plucking. The instrument has a pear-shaped wooden body with a varying number of frets ranging from 12 to 26.

The pipa is a very ancient instrument that was used widely during the Tang Dynasty (almost 1000 years ago).

The pipa was a very important instrument played to the emperor of China in the imperial court. The instrument can be played individual or as part of an orchestra for use in productions such as daqu (大曲, grand suites), an elaborate music and dance performance.

Equipment

You will be provided with a pipa to practice with during class hours.

You will need to bring your own pipa fake nails(for 5 fingers) and tape.
