The Out There Award is an exciting new opportunity for young people aged 18-26 to get a free, inspiring and enriching introduction to Scotland’s outdoors.

Thanks to Active Scotland funding, we’ll run three-day Out There Awards for about 120 people in total at four locations: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Tayside.

Each of the three non-consecutive days will have a different focus:

  • Day One - outdoor skills: navigation, safety, packing, kit and route selection
  • Day Two - a challenging walk: led by a trained Ramblers walk leader
  • Day Three - volunteering: for example learning how to lead walks and maintain paths.

Everyone who completes the three Out There Award elements will receive:

  • One-year Ramblers membership, worth up to £35.85
  • A Ramblers Scotland neck buff
  • An Out There Award Certificate
  • A social introduction to their nearest Young Walkers group
  • 1,000 Young Scot Reward points!

Applicants must be aged between 18-26 and register here for all three stages of the award to be considered for inclusion. Successful candidates will be informed within 48 hours if you have been accepted on to the award.

Edinburgh programme

Saturday 27th July - Outdoor Skills: 10am Holyrood Education Centre

In the morning, we'll start to break down the barriers to the outdoors through active and engaging skills sessions. These skills will be put into practice during the afternoon session when we'll get out there; exploring Arthur's Seat.

Saturday 10th August - A Challenging Walk: Tinto (Southern Uplands)

This will be a day of pushing personal boundaries and putting new skills to the test. We will meet up at Holyrood car park and convoy with the Edinburgh Young Walkers deep into the Southern Uplands to walk up Tinto Hill.

Sunday 11th August - Volunteering

We'll be heading to the Scottish Borders to work with the Borders Forest Trust; helping them conserve, restore and manage native woodlands. This is an amazing opportunity for everyone to learn how to give something back to Scottish walking through structured volunteering opportunities.

By applying to be a part of the Out There Award, you also are consenting to The Ramblers contacting you by email to share information about The Ramblers. This information will include facts about the work we do, information about future award events, the benefits of being a member of the Ramblers and how to become a member. We may also communicate with you to promote the work we do as a charity. We will keep you up to date with our news, campaigns, events and fundraising activities. We will also contact you with a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the award to track awardee development and satisfaction.

Please be assured that The Ramblers will do everything to ensure that the personal information you provide us with will remain secure. We will never sell your personal data.

If you’d like any more information, please email sam.knight@ramblers.org.uk or call Sam on 0131 357 5850.
