This year marks the 40th anniversaries of Margaret Thatcher’s coming into power, the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the start of economic reform in China, and the 30th anniversaries of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, the massacre in Tiananmen Square, and the invention of the World Wide Web.
The 1980s was a decade of profound global shift, affecting international relations, politics, economics, technology, society, and culture. The changes in this decade have shaped the world we live in today. The Library will be looking back at this decade through a series of essays delivered online, a special treasures display, and series of 80s events at George IV Bridge and Kelvin Hall
