These classes focus on Butoh as an approach to movement. Butoh encourages a space for listening to the inner world, surrendering to the moment and acquiring a developed sensibility to connect the space between inner desire and outer impulses. Through playing with giving up ‘knowing’ and notions of what is ‘beautiful’ or ‘theatre’ or ‘dance’, we enter into a process of recognising time and space in the smallest of movements.

Training focuses on encouraging strength and stamina, as well as harnessing ‘ki’ or inner energy, to be able to move from another system, beyond the entirely anatomical. Training also focuses on developing the ‘whole self’, including the imagination. Classes mainly focus on improvisation approaches but also cover the lineages of the two founders of Butoh Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata.

Tutor: Marie-Gabrille Rotie

Marie-Gabrielle Rotie is a artist, choreographer and  lecturer in Theatre and Performance at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her career spans nearly 30 years of creating works for her own company, as well as movement direction for commercial theatre (Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre), and teaching in a wide range of institutions including conservatoires including Trinity Laban and RCSSD. Her own productions have been funded by Arts Council and British Council and toured nationally and internationally between 1999 and 2018.

Marie-Gabrielle trained as a Fine Artist painter at Wimbledon School of Art and then trained in dance/theatre, discovering butoh accidentally. This took her to studying in Japan and Europe with many key practitioners, leading to duet collaborations with Ko Murobushi, Atsushi Takenouchi, as well as creating lifelong influences from her studies in Japan with Kazuo Ohno and in the Asbestos Kan studio, with Hijikata’s widow Akiko Motofuji. She has been a singular and driving force in producing and hosting Butoh in the UK but Marie-Gabrielle's work extends far beyond those parameters. She has carved a distinct artistic path and aesthetic of her own, crossing artistic mediums, with current work mediated through film and photography and centred on site-specific practice.
