A one day research symposium to explore the role that embodied performance practices play in the construction of memory. It seeks to understand the impact of artistic practices (e.g., theatre, dance, circus, song, poetry, crafting) in processes of reconciliation and conflict resolution.

The debate will open with a provocation on dance and memory in the aftermath of conflict by Dr. Clare Parfitt, (Chichester University), followed by a combination of paper presentations, video clips and roundtable discussions by international researchers and practitioners. They will discuss art-based initiatives focusing on the construction of memory and the representation of unheard voices in museums, textiles, traditional dances, memory parks and more. Questions on understandings of memory and collective memory(ies), the challenges of conducting research when conflict remains ongoing, and the possibilities of art-based methodologies, will guide the debate.

The symposium is part of the AHRC funded research project ‘Embodied Performance Practices in Processes of Reconciliation, Construction of Memory and Peace in Chocó and El Pacífico Medio, Colombia’ (co-funded by Colciencias).

Our aim is to open up a critical space to discuss the richness of embodied knowledge in Colombia, Latin America and beyond. A great opportunity to meet and connect with other practitioners with similar research interests and to explore future collaboration. The event will close on time to join our partners at the annual PopMoves Conference hosted at Roehampton University this year.
