Autonomous Women?: gendered obstacles for female artists in the commercial sector
This lecture will present an in-depth look into Dr. Kate McMillan's research for the 2019 Freelands Foundation report 'Representation of Female Artists in Britain', and consider the role the commercial sector plays in overcoming many of the barriers to entry women artists face.
In addition to the Freelands report, McMillan will present - for the first time - three years of data on 120 commercial galleries in London. McMillan will argue that despite the commercial world's insistence on impartiality and market imperatives, the sector's engagement with the broader ecology must underpin a moral obligation to 'do the numbers' and lead change.
