Michele initially trained in Architecture, but after realising that she was much more interested in hands-on making, she studied Fine Art at Leeds College of Art and the University of Northumbria. She set up and ran a gallery and picture framing business in North Yorkshire for 10 years before taking the leap into full-time creative work in 2013. She studied for a Diploma in Glass and Ceramics at the National Glass Centre and has since been working from her studio, initially in North Yorkshire and since 2017 in the North West Highlands where she has built an off-grid eco-house and studio. Her ceramics are all handbuilt using a range of techniques and hand-carved. The glazes she uses are all made and developed by her in response to the colours and textures in her surrounding environment. Michele is very much inspired by the natural world and the wonderful landscape and colours on her doorstep – the mesh of branches on wintry trees, the geometric patterns in eroded rock faces, the rhythms of the tide or the intricate structures of pods, leaves and petals.
During this talk Michele will share information about her techniques, show her carving tools and vessels at various stages in the making process.
