Painting from the model can be difficult to navigate, balancing colour, tone, proportions, perspective, composition, and emotional narrative. Through this class we will get back to the basics of life-painting, referencing the work of some of the great life-painters, William Etty, Lucien Freud, Euan Uglow, Jenny Saville and more, mining their work for their wisdom on painting TONE!
Understanding tonal values in painting is one of the most crucial skills that a painter can master, a grasp of tone underpins paintings of all kinds, from the most expressive to the most detailed and classical. Through this class we will be using a limited colour palette and exploring monochromatic painting in the manner of the Old Masters allowing students of all levels to to grips with the importance of understanding light and dark within painting.
Working from our model with materials provided, this is a class that will suit all levels, from complete beginner to practicing artist, and will cover basic tuition in creating a composed, measured drawing with accurate tonal values, with lessons and techniques that can be transferred to any method of working.
