Playful printing onto fabric using block and mono printing techniques.

Over 8 sessions you will print on to fabric and paper using a series of handmade printing blocks from foam, lino, erasers, cardboard and string. Other experimental printing materials such as sponges, discarded packaging, found objects, brushes and paper stencils will also be used.

Develop your ideas from drawings and collage and through the printing process. Work collaboratively and independently playing with mark making, over printing, pattern and composition.

Throughout the course Deborah will encourage an experimental approach to design with a focus on the process of printing and you will be introduced to inspirational printers such as Eduardo Paolozzi.

Your experiments may lead to a printed handkerchief, bag, tea towel, cushion cover, apron or series of experimental samples to fuel your newly found printing passion! The emphasis is on fun, experimentation and an open minded approach to printing.

Printed Textiles 1 is suitable for both beginners, continuing students and those with previous experience. It is the first part of a three term course which builds on different textile print techniques and design approaches, but can be taken on its own.

Previous students have used the course to rekindle their creative practice, build a textile portfolio for university arts applications, learn new skills and meet like-minded people.

Most materials are supplied although students will need to bring the following materials/equipment along:

Plain white or lightly coloured linen/cotton (2 mtrs)
Or plain cotton/linen tote bag, or t-towel, apron, handkerchief
Or mixture of each
Small pieces of plain cotton/linen fabric for testing
Paper scissors
Scalpel
A selection of drawing materials e.g. 2B pencil, black fineliner

Days: 8 Monday evenings
Times: 18:00 - 21:00
Dates: 7 October - 25 November
