Thursday Talks

Storm in a Teapot - Russian Propaganda Porcelain

Speaker: Maggie Monaghan

05 September, 6pm for 6.30pm

This lecture covers the history of this rare propaganda porcelain, produced as a result of the 1917 Russian Revolution. It describes where and why the porcelain was made, its distribution and recipients and its history as far as possible up to the present day. The impact upon the lives of the people involved in its manufacture is discussed and the whole talk is lavishly illustrated with examples of the porcelain.

Speaker Biography:

After a career in Science, a move to Newcastle in 1970s resulted in change of career for Maggie and the opportunity to study 20C Russian art in the University Fine Arts Department, led by Professor John Milner, a world expert on Russian constructivism.  A serendipitous visit to Sothebys in 1998 introduced her to porcelain from the period of the Revolution which created an interest which continues to this day.

A collector of fine art –mainly Scottish 20thC - she lives in an Arts and Crafts House in north Northumberland overlooking Lindisfarne and has restored a garden which is open for charity.
