Overview:

Dhaka Medical College (DMC), established on July 10, 1946, holds the distinction of being the first medical college in Bangladesh. The original building of DMC predates the partition of Bengal in 1905. Currently, Bangladesh boasts 37 government and 72 private medical colleges offering MBBS programs to both local and international students. All medical colleges in Bangladesh are affiliated with one of seven universities, four of which are government-run and the remaining three are private institutions. These universities conduct professional examinations in accordance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Government of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BM&DC) serves as the regulatory body overseeing MBBS education in the country. Affiliation with BM&DC is mandatory for all medical colleges, and both the Ministry of Health and BM&DC maintain strict supervision over these institutions.

Government Medical Colleges in Bangladesh offer 104 seats (92 MBBS seats and 12 BDS seats) for eligible students from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Seat allocation under the SAARC quota is based on merit, and admission is facilitated through recommendations from the respective countries.
