The Gravel Pit Chapel Graveyard

There is a walled-off graveyard in central Hackney by Mead Place. It is a link back to a radical 18th century non-conformist congregation, outside the established governance of the Church of England, which became famous in the 1780s when Dr Richard Price, a supporter of the French Revolution was its minister. Another of its leading figures was Joseph Priestley, theologian, dissenter, grammarian and scientist, who was minister in the 1790s.

The Gravel Pit Chapel moved to its new site near the graveyard in 1810. Becoming Unitarian and rebuilt in 1858 the chapel continued in use until the 1960’s, then was bought by Hackney Council and demolished to make way for new housing.

The council took over the graveyard. Left largely undisturbed, it is now a biodiverse area - a site of natural as well as historic interest.

Our visit:

Tim Walder, Hackney conservation officer, will give us access, a rare occurence.  There is no charge for this members-only event, which is not a guided visit or talk. Rather, it is a chance for members to see what there is in the graveyard and we hope join in some discussion about options for its future. Come with ideas and pass them on to the council.

Please arrive from 6:15pm so we can enter the gaveyard together at 6:30.
