I am currently working with a leading Music Publishing company to help them recruit for a Engineering manager. tThis roleis more focused on good
people management as its core competency, and may be suitable for a first time manager or
someone looking to step up from managing 1 or 2 people to managing a team of 6 to 8.
The team is already in place, so no requirement on building a team from scratch, but
encouraging development and building cultural best practices are essential.
The candidate should be comfortable working with backend technologies to a level where
they can critique and feedback on code and in discussionswhere required, although there is
a good level of seniority in the team to complement them.
But the role needs someone with big data engineering experience - whether stream
processing or more batch oriented with map/reduce technologies, i.e. prior experience of
building and operating data pipeline products in collaboration with Product Managers and
business stakeholders.
Thecandidate should also be comfortable discussing technical issues with staff level
engineers and business stakeholders where appropriate.
Responsibilities
● Lead a team of engineers through hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback and career
development.
● Actively participate in designing solutions for kobalt systems through technical
contributions.
● Advocate and advance modern software development practices and engineering
culture.
● Partner with senior/staff engineers tostrive for technical excellence, and move our
tech stack forward.
● Foster a healthy and collaborative environment aligned with Kobalt values.
Technical skills required
They don't need to be a lead IC developer themselves but they should have asolid
understanding of modern backend technologies, and be able to discuss and make credible
system design choices technologies and issues.
Essential experience:
● Big data processing pipelines - on either the stream processing side or if on the batch
processing side experience with Hadoop-related technologies (spark, hive,
map/reduce)
● Strong SQL
Experienceof the following are desirable:
● Java
● Spring boot
● Kafka
● Spark/scala
● HexagonalArchitecture
As part of 'Advocate and advance modern software development practices and engineering
culture' we'd expect themto be:
- Strong on test and on CI / CD automation
- Ditto on observability
- Understand Incident Management
- Be able to reason about scalability issues and do capacity planning
- AWS experience isn't a must have but we'd expect some cloud experienceand
knowledge of IaC
