Between 2017 when it was first reported and 2018, the median gender pay gap in the UK closed from 9.7% to 9.6%. At that rate, for it to disappear altogether would take close to a century. We don't know the rate of change in ethnicity pay gaps because the government hasn't decided whether to force companies to publish them, but the raw figures are shocking. Black male graduates earn on average £3.90 per hour (17%) less than their white counterparts, and black female graduates £1.62 less (9%). The Resolution Foundation think tank estimates that BAME workers in the UK are missing out on more than £3bn a year in wages. All the warm words we've heard from companies about the benefits of a diverse workforce don't seem to be moving the dial quickly on equal pay for women and people from ethnic minorities. What would it take?
