Hospital Rooms’ mission is to bring world class art to mental health hospitals. Our vision is for all people in mental health wards to have the freedom to experience extraordinary artworks. We believe in the power of art to provide joy and dignity and to stimulate and heal.

Our exhibition this year will showcase our latest project at the Hellingly Centre, a forensic medium secure mental health unit in Sussex and includes artwork by Richard Wentworth, Lothar Götz, Hannah Brown, Tim A Shaw, Jonathan Trayte and Sophie Clements; as well as by the community of patients and staff.

Fashion and Identity Panel Discussion with Natalie Tilbury

Dress (encompassing clothing, tattoos, jewellery and all other forms of body adornment) is a complex form of communication and a performative act. In a locked mental health environment, is it possible to redefine the ‘currency’ of fashion, or certain types of dress? How do men there feel about the way they dress and can personal items be an aid to recovery?

Unreason is Reason Dazzled Live Podcast Recording with Phoebe Eustance

Tuesday 22 October / 18:30 - 19:30

…we must understand it not as reason diseased, or as reason lost or alienated, but quite simply as reason dazzled – Michel Foucault

This episode looks at the active role of art as a record of, and occasional witness to, changing perceptions of mental health through history and culture. Borrowing from diverse voices, this live recording centres around three artworks painted on the walls of mental health institutes and explores how their presence can give agency and alternate meaning to ensuing events. The focus is on a mid-20th century fresco located in a former psychiatric hospital in Arezzo, Italy and two works created with Hospital Rooms this year by a patient and artist respectively.

Programmed by Phoebe Eustance, Hospital Rooms Project Coordinator
with Jess Oglethorpe, Occupational Therapist

Reaching Outside Film Screening, Bringing Art to Mental Health Units

Thursday 24 October / 18:30 - 20:30

Across six short films, you will see how the work of artists Hannah Brown, Steve Macleod, Harold Offeh, Mark Titchner and Tim A Shaw is being shown where people least expect it, on the walls of locked and secure mental health units across the UK.

This will be followed by a Q&A with Mark Titchner, Steve Macleod, Hannah Brown and Tim A Shaw.

This film series has been generously funded by The Space.
